Referrals are a tremendous way to build your business, especially when it's a pro-active tactic. Andy is as versed as anyone on the subject, if not more so.

I don't care what your business is, you can use the techniques of Word of Mouth Marketing easily if you understand how it works. It's not hard, and best of all, it's not expensive.

i see alot of people making the mistake of separating advertising and PR. Word of mouth is crucial for business advertising.

Word of mouth although is good technique..but don't you think it does not sustain in the long run....word of mouth has a short time span and it fades out soon I believe.

I think there's always going to be a relationship between word of mouth advertising and business success. Consider that if you're not getting good word of mouth, then there's likely something really wrong with your business in the first place, and your existing customers aren't particularly happy! It's not something that has to be kept up (as a marketing exercise), it's critical to your business, period!

I've always found that word of mouth or recommendations always far outperforms any other type of marketing or promotion. However in order to get these types of recommendations you have to work hard and over deliver. This takes time but long term it is well worth the effort.

Conversely there is also bad word of mouth marketing, how do you deal with negative feedback without appearing to be the bad guy?

Since I do not have a huge marketing budget I rely as much as I can on Word of Mouth Marketing. I make special efforts to keep in constant contact with my current and prior customers, and ask them from time to time if they have a friend or colleague who might be interested in my services. It is surprising how many people react positively to this. Since I know people are busy and they might forget to contact the person they had in mind, I ask if they will share the e-mail address of the person they are going to recommend to me, and some people are willing to do this. Just keep gently reminding your customer base of who you are and how you can benefit them, and other small business owners.

Word of mouth on an individual event will cartainly die down sooner or later. But if you provide a constantly good, and interesting service, your customers will keep on talking about what you do.

I am reading a great book called "Viral Loop" right now, which is in a similar vein. If you can crack the code, there is a lot of money to be made very quickly.
