Why should your business remain home-based?

If you own a business and were presented with the choice to work from home or from a location outside of the home which would you choose? I think it would be safe to say most would prefer working from home. Therefore, it was not a surprise to me when I came across this article stating that the majority of small business owners who started their business at home continue to remain home-based. Oftentimes, the desire to save money is cited as the main reason why many small business owners choose to remain at home.

However, I believe one of the main reasons that plays a role in the decision to remain home-based is flexibility. One of the reasons often cited in why people pursue entrepreneurship is their desire to combine their passion (aka their “dream job”) with their personal life. We all understand the fact that we need to make a living, but we also want to be able to spend time with our family and friends (hence, why we work). When you work from home you are able to spend more time with your family and friends while performing a job that you love. You literally have the best of both worlds, so why would you want to rock the boat by moving your business outside of the home?

In my opinion, I sometimes feel that people do not give home-based businesses the respect that they deserve. Some still subscribe to the viewpoint that you have not “made it” until you have moved out of the home. Do you remember the last time you saw a home-based business owner’s profile plastered on the cover of a business magazine?  I certainly cannot recall an instance which is why I wish there were more articles such as this one highlighting the achievements of home-based business owners. Those of us that have home-based businesses already know that we are more than capable of serving the needs of our clientele from the comfort of home.

I believe you work harder when you work from home. I often lose track of time because I become so engrossed in my work. I find working from home to be less distracting because you do not have to worry about coworkers stopping by your desk to chat or sitting in meaningless meetings. When you are in a comfortable environment (for many people this place would be home) and doing something that you are passionate about, you are prone to work longer. However, working from home enables you to choose when and how you spend your day because you have the power to structure your schedule. Oftentimes, working outside the home can be more of a headache because you have to worry about commuting, who will pick up the kids from daycare, etc. Again, I realize many people start businesses from their home, but I do not believe that saving money is the sole reason why many of these businesses remain home-based.

Do you feel that saving money and technological advances are the main reasons businesses that started at home continue to remain home-based once they experience growth?

I deliver the views over as normal inspiration but obviously seek questions much like the one you bring up the place one of the most virtually thing can be working in honest professional faith. I don?t know if extremely good practices have emerged available things like that, but I am certain that your task is evidently identified being fair game.

The best reason for keeping a business home based is expenses. The overhead of a brick and mortar location can easily put you under

I definitely agree! I am all about keeping my costs down and of course I love the comfort of working at home as well. Thanks for your comment!

Hi Ms. Freeman,

I haven't reached that stage either, but I am pretty confident that I would do everything I could to continue working at home. With all the advances in technology I find it harder to believe that I would not be able to run the business from home in the event I significantly expand. Thanks for your comment!

Although my business has not grown to a point where I have been presented with the choice of moving its location, I think I can honestly say that I would prefer to continue to work from my home. As cited the convenience and flexibility are the major reasons along with the exorbitant costs of maintaining a business off cite.

But again once that "problem" presents itself I am not 100% sure.

Something I don't hear much about are the hybrid home-based businesses that incorporate a small percentage of time out in the local sphere with the majority share of time spent working in the home. Strictly home-based business sometimes have the disadvantage of disconnecting the owner from the local community. Social networking tools and networking events ease that worry a bit, thankfully. So yeah, I think technological advances do have a role in keeping it all at home.

Hi ShawnD,
I have not heard much about hybrid home-based businesses. Honestly, it sounds similar to home-based businesses to me. Home-based owners also have the ability to local sphere too (I think it is safe to say that the majority of home-based businesses get their clients from networking events). I feel that technological advances play a role as well, but I think there are other factors involved too. Thank you for your comment!

I hope to remain a home-based business because it will give me an excuse to redo my home office (and write some of it off) *wink*

The main reason my business is still home-based after 10 years is because it gives me maximum flexibility to be available to my husband and our young children. I wouldn't have it any other way, even though it is challenging to focus in important projects with children around. But when I need total focus, I go to the library or the local coffee shop. I'm fortunate that my husband is also my business partner and we both work at home. This makes it easy to trade off work hours and kid duties. Thanks for a great post. Long live home-based businesses!!

Rightfully stated! I love this post. I am one who loves working from home and find it dream job. You are so right working outside the home can be more of a headache.

Hi Terrance,

I am all for redecorating and can't think of a better excuse for doing so. Get ready to make room for your new office! ;)

Hi Donna Maria,

First off congrats on being a home-based business owner for 10 years- that is absolutely FANTASTIC! I love the flexibility working from home enables you to have as well. I truly believe that corporations would see a lift in morale if they allowed their employees to work from home. In my opinion, they would be more motivated to get the job done. Thanks for your comment!

Hi Yolanda,

I love working from home too and that's why I find it puzzling when others choose not to do so (I respect their choice- to each its own). Making your own schedule has always been a plus in my book! Glad you enjoyed the post and thanks for your comment.
