I thrive on challenges. I love the thrill of accomplishing a difficult task I did not think I was going to complete. For that moment in time, I feel like I am on top of the world. Who doesn’t like feeling this way? In order to continue feeling “thrilled,” you might even be motivated to seek out other projects to tackle.
Now as much as I enjoy the feeling of defying the odds, I realize the importance of recognizing my limitations. This is a skill many business owners struggle in mastering. They often find themselves taking on projects they had no business in accepting. For example, if I went into business as a chef, I should not even attempt to design my own website (obviously, if you have the skills go for it—but most likely you probably do not). Yet, how many of us find ourselves in this situation?
Small business owners are used to juggling numerous projects. Some do it for the “thrill,” others do it because they have issues delegating projects, while some deem that they cannot afford to outsource. Regardless, of what camp you may find yourself in, it is imperative that you discover a way to satisfy the limitations that you are unable to fulfill. Doing so will enable you to avoid experiencing unnecessary disappointment.
Knowing your limitations is a built in protection against wasting time, money, and energy on endeavors that you do not possess the knowledge to pursue. In order for you to thrive, you must concentrate on operating within your strong points. We are the product of what we think so it is important that we carefully choose where we want to focus our mental energy. This way, we can avoid the pitfalls that we are bound to experience when we operate outside our limitations. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel like you are on top of the world, but in order to keep from slipping you have to know when to call for back up. How do you know you have reached your limit? I would love to hear from you!
In our next post, I will discuss the top ten tasks that will cause a business owner to “fall” if they do not possess the knowledge to undertake these tasks.
